Helpful Tips for Winter Bass Fishing

Helpful Tips for Winter Bass Fishing
by Helmut Friedrich

For the majority of fishermen winter bass fishing is something that is difficult and frustrating. Not only can it be difficult to fish for bass in the winter, but then you also have to deal with the often freezing temperatures while sitting in a boat. However, many don’t know that the best bass fishing is found in the winter. So with a few tips you can have an easier time with winter bass fishing.

To be successful at winter bass fishing you will need to have self-condition and mental preparation before starting.
Then when you start winter bass fishing you will need to have a lot of concentration and patience since the number one factor in winter bass fishing is going slowly. You will need to leave your lure almost motionless at the bottom for minutes at a time and this can be hard when you are waiting in freezing cold temperatures even with the modern technology and clothing that can help keep us warm.

However, if you stick with winter bass fishing you will likely catch the biggest bass you have ever caught. This fact alone makes fishing in the winter bearable for many. The reason this occurs is because with the lack of fishing pressure in the winter the bass are more likely to take the bait. In addition, the bass that do take the bait in the winter are often the large females since they are taking advantage of such a large and easy meal in the cold of winter.

Choosing a Winter Location

When it comes to winter bass fishing it is best to choose shallow waters that are no deeper than twelve feet. The bass will often tend to congregate in places that have an abrupt change in depth nearby. They will also tend to hang around areas with cover such as weeds or a submerged tree. When you find these locations you will likely find a large group of bass.

Even though winter bass fishing can be very frustrating at times it can also be very productive. You just need to make sure you choose the right lake and the best fishing location. Then make sure you exercise patience and you are bound to catch at least one fish that will make the entire winter bass fishing experience worthwhile. Especially if you catch that big fish that is bigger than anything you have ever caught on any previous fishing trip.

We catch bass through the ice here in NY during the winter. They pretty much refuse to put up a fight. The cold water slows down their metabolism greatly.
